Former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama and second gentleman Doug Emhoff were the keynote speakers at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Tuesday. The Obamas made an impassioned appeal to American voters and pledged to continue their efforts to support Vice President Kamala Harris in the final 11 weeks of her presidential campaign. Emhoff used his speech to show a personal side of Harris, who he described as an anchor of her family. Although Harris skipped the second night of the convention to campaign in Milwaukee, she symbolically accepted the party’s presidential nomination after convention delegates conducted a ceremonial roll call. Speakers today include Harris’ running mate Tim Walz, former President Bill Clinton and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

In today’s “One Thing” podcast, CNN’s David Rind travels to the DNC to hear from Democrats about how Harris has energized the race – and whether that enthusiasm will translate into votes. Listen here.

This week, large protests are taking place ahead of the Democratic National Convention, including clashes with police on the streets of Chicago. Law enforcement officials set up additional security fencing in the area on Tuesday, a day after a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators protesting U.S. support for Israel in the war against Hamas broke through a cordon near the United Center. Tuesday’s protests also included tense moments outside the Israeli consulate in Chicago, when protesters and helmeted police began shoving each other, a CNN crew observed. Hundreds of police took to the streets and cleared the roadway and sidewalks. It is unclear how many arrests were made Tuesday, but it appears several people were detained by police.

Chicago workers erected an additional row of security fencing in front of the United Center on Tuesday morning.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is considering dropping out of the 2024 presidential race and instead endorsing former President Donald Trump, his running mate Nicole Shanahan said in an interview Tuesday. She called the decision an effort to reduce “the risk” of Vice President Kamala Harris becoming president, arguing that Kennedy is drawing more votes from Trump than Harris. Asked about the role Kennedy might play in a future Trump administration, Shanahan speculated her running mate might be open to a role as health secretary. Trump said Tuesday he would “certainly” be open to a role for Kennedy in his administration. This comes as new filings also show Kennedy is facing dwindling campaign resources and nearly $3.5 million in outstanding debt.

Russian authorities today accused Ukraine of launching “one of the largest attempts ever” to attack Moscow with drones. Russia said its defense systems destroyed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight – including 11 over Moscow, two over the border region of Belgorod and two in Kursk. Since the Ukrainian attack began nearly two weeks ago, Ukrainian forces have been advancing in Kursk, destroying key bridges in an attempt to hamper Moscow’s logistical capabilities and cut off supply routes. Separately, Russian authorities have urged people in border regions to stop using dating apps and limit their use of social media to prevent Ukrainian forces from gathering intelligence as they advance.

Italian authorities today continued their search for six missing people after a tornado sank a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday. According to the Italian coast guard, 15 passengers were rescued from the boat shortly after it capsized. A body was later recovered from the hull of the stricken vessel, named “Bayesian.” Among the missing are two Americans and four Britons – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a well-known lawyer. Initial reports suggest that a small waterspout that formed over the area on Monday may have been responsible for the yacht’s sinking.
