No. 1 seed Danielle Collins suffered a surprise loss to young player Erika Andreeva in her opening match of the Monterrey Open, where she also lashed out at the crowd.

Andreeva, the older sister of 17-year-old talent Mirra Andreeva, achieved an impressive 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory, the first win of her career over a top-20 player.

The decisive moment of the match, however, came when Collins was waiting for Andreeva’s serve in the third set. When she heard something from the stands, she raised her arms in the air and asked a section of the audience: “What on earth?”

“I don’t understand. It’s not that hard to let us play tennis and support us,” she said.

Collins, ranked number 11 in the world, will retire at the end of the season aged just 30 after suffering from several health problems throughout her career, including rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis, meaning the upcoming US Open will be her last Grand Slam.

The American has had a brilliant last year on the tour, winning her first WTA 1000 event at the Miami Open in March, followed by a victory at the Charleston Open in April.

Collins received a bye to the second round in Monterrey, while 20-year-old Andreeva had to pull off a solid straight-sets win over Anhelina Kalinina to face either Lulu Sun or María Lourdes Carlé in the quarterfinals.

Andreeva achieved the most beautiful victory of her career so far.

Meanwhile, 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez suffered a surprise defeat to qualifier Ana Bogdan in the first round of the Cleveland Championships.

Romania’s world number 103 came from behind to win impressively 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-2, while Fernandez, the number 2 seed and world number 24, made 11 double faults in a flawed performance.

At 5-4 in the second set, Fernandez served to equalize, but could not hold his serve and eventually lost in the tiebreak.
