San Francisco International Airport has launched the $2.6 billion Terminal 3 West modernization project. The expansion is scheduled to open in fall 2027 and is intended to “create an exceptional airport experience.”

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has begun modernizing Terminal 3 West, a $2.6 billion construction project that will renovate the existing 60,000-square-foot west half of Terminal 3, including earthquake protection, expanded security screening and new passenger amenities. The project will also create 18,500 square feet of additional space, allowing room for more food and beverage and retail. The expanded area is scheduled to open in fall 2027.

“We are excited to launch this Terminal 3 renovation and expansion project,” said SFO Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “Our goal is to provide our guests with an exceptional airport experience while leading the way in sustainability and innovation. We expect this project will raise the bar for what travelers can expect at SFO.”

The Terminal 3 West modernization project will create an inviting new exterior facade that greets travelers at the curb, more space for check-in including state-of-the-art baggage storage, and new security checkpoints, including one on the mezzanine level for AirTrain passengers. Arriving international travelers will have direct access to the customs hall in the international terminal via a new Federal Inspection Service (FIS) sterile walkway. The project also includes a new six-story building that will house both airline lounges and office space. The renovated and expanded western half is scheduled to open in fall 2027, with the six-story building opening in early 2028. A renovated check-in lobby at the east end of Terminal 3 is scheduled to open in early 2029.

“We are always looking for ways to expand our operations in the San Francisco Bay Area, so we are excited that these state-of-the-art improvements to airport facilities will entice even more people to visit us here,” said Lori Augustine, vice president of airport operations for United’s SFO hub. “We have had an incredible partnership with the airport for many decades, and our collaboration with them on the T3 West project is a symbol of our commitment to San Francisco and our confidence in this city as one of the most desirable places to live, work and visit.”

SFO is pursuing LEED Platinum certification for this project. Sustainability features include daylighting, displacement ventilation, on-site photovoltaic cells, waste heat recovery, low-carbon steel and concrete, energy-efficient baggage handling, dynamic glazing, recycled water, hydration stations, health-friendly materials, and green building education.

At its peak, the project is expected to employ 500 to 600 workers and aims to award more than $173 million in contracts to local companies.
