Coralville wants to build new park with hiking, biking and goat opportunities

The city of Coralville has approved a plan to transform nearly 110 acres into a massive community park.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the West Land Use Park Master Plan, approved by the City Council last week, includes hiking trails, mountain bike trails, a nature education center, and even a goat barn! The project would be built on vacant land west of the Oakdale Medical and Classification Center in Coralville.

In addition to all the recreational opportunities, the new park will also help preserve the natural landscape and improve the ecological health of the area, according to the Gazette. Preliminary estimates put the new park at about $9.4 million, with $1.4 million set aside as a reserve.

In addition to building the park, the Gazette said, traffic improvements would also need to be made on Jones Blvd. and University Parkway, including widening and roundabouts. These costs are not included in the construction cost estimates. The park is still in the early stages of development, so there is no firm timeline yet for when construction might begin, according to the Gazette.
