GICC is ready to shake things up

GICC is ready to shake things up

The turnaround. That is what Grand Island Central Catholic football is looking for in the upcoming fall season.

Entering his second year as coach is Jeff Ashby, who came over from Wood River in 2023. When I spoke with him beforehand, Ashby talked about defense being a big key to the physicality that could lead to more wins this fall after allowing 24 points per game and winning two games in 2023.

“Defense is a big deal,” Ashby said. “If they can be really physical on defense, it puts a little pressure on the offense. We’re looking forward to it.”

One of the guys the Crusaders’ opponents should keep an eye on? Connor Haney, just a junior who led the team with two sacks as an outside linebacker. On offense, Haney was second in receiving yards per game (43.7) and third in receiving touchdowns (3).

Haney has a great group of guys on his side, with Grayson Sack at quarterback and in the secondary and Jack Alberts on the outside positions. He led the Sadder Nation with 44.1 receiving yards per game.

Speaking of Haney, he talked about what it takes to improve on last year’s record (2-7).

“We were close to winning several games,” Haney said. “If we can be a little more physical and energetic, we’ll overcome that hurdle and hopefully win a lot more.”

The more wins, the better. The first game, if it goes well for GICC, would be a good win, as the Crusaders travel to St. Cecilia for the season opener. Kickoff at Duncan Field is scheduled for Friday evening, August 30th, at 7 p.m.
