  • She talked about sudden changes when she went on tour for Kamala Harris

Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz is still baffled by her family’s sudden situation since Kamala Harris chose her husband Tim as her running mate.

So much is new, she can barely put it into words. “I could probably say what’s not so crazy about it,” she told DailyMail.com on the second day of the Democratic National Convention, which was still underway Tuesday evening.

Walz packed 21 family members into the best seats at the United Center to enjoy the moment as her husband’s image was broadcast into the stadium from Milwaukee following performances by Lil Jon and Patti LaBelle.

She stopped for an interview in a room filled with cheering Democrats who suddenly welcomed the 60-year-old Minnesota governor with open arms, along with his dad jokes and his call to campaign with “joy.”

The first lady of Minnesota ignored her staff’s admonitions not to speak to the press, she said, in a sign of how she might chart her own course if she makes it to Washington. (Harris has resisted pressure for an official interview and answered only brief questions from reporters.)

A surreal moment for Walz was when she suddenly saw her name written in giant letters on a campaign bus that was touring battleground Pennsylvania before the power couples headed to Chicago.

“I would say, when you see your name on the bus like Harris-Walz, do you know the sign? Wow. I mean, really?” she said, amazed. “That’s a real lesson, I guess. Even if you’re running. It was fast,” she said.

She said the block letters with the two names made a big impression.

Teaching moment: Minnesota’s First Lady Gwen Walz spoke to DailyMail.com about what it was like to gain popularity after her husband Governor Tim Walz became Kamala Harris’s vice presidential running mate.

Walz wore a bright red dress for the occasion and came to the arena to take selfies with some of the 21 family members she brought with her, while looking after her mother and mother-in-law at the event, which featured performances by rappers such as Common and Lil Jon and speeches by political figures with Barack Obama as the headliner.

There is one issue she simply refuses to address: whether the names Harris and Walz deserve an apostrophe. This is an obscure but controversial issue that the New York Times took up after the two names were linked. The issue, which seems to be an unresolved question of style, is whether to add an “s” after one or both names when formulating a possessive.

It’s Waltz’s curse.

“I’m staying out of it. This is a really interesting conversation. I’m an English teacher,” she said diplomatically.

“There are many disagreements about grammar,” she explained.

Nor is she willing to hint that she is currently measuring the curtains at the US Naval Observatory, the residence of the incumbent Vice President in Washington DC

“We are currently trying to maintain the majority in the Minnesota House of Representatives,” she joked when asked if she would make any changes.

Walz did not discuss her future career plans if she moves to Washington. First Lady Jill Biden continues to teach at a community college.

She has long been an advocate for educational issues and sponsors school clubs. She and Walz met at a school in Nebraska where they both taught. In addition to teaching, she served as a public school administrator in Minnesota for two decades. She has also worked to expand educational opportunities for prisoners.
