Doug Emhoff, the husband of Kamala Harris, took the stage at the Democratic Party Convention in Chicago on Tuesday and spoke on behalf of his wife, who was recently announced as his party’s presidential candidate.

Doug Emhoff grew up on both coasts
Emhoff was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in New Jersey, but as a teenager he and his family moved to Southern California, where he graduated from Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, California, near Los Angeles. He attended Cal-State Northridge and USC for his bachelor’s and juris doctor degrees, respectively, and began a legal career in 1990.
Doug Emhoff is a former entertainment lawyer who resigned when Harris became vice president.
Emhoff worked at DLA Piper, one of the world’s largest law firms, and his clients included studio executives, production companies, national brands and even a former NFL athlete.
After Harris joined the Democrats, he took a break from that job. His connections in the entertainment industry came in handy when he helped his wife campaign for the U.S. Senate in California in 2016.
Since the 2020 election, Emhoff has taught law at Georgetown University and advocates for women’s rights and access to legal aid. She also draws attention to anti-Semitism and mental health issues. Emhoff is Jewish.

The couple was set up on a blind date in 2013 by Harris’ best friend Chrisette Hudlin, who was represented by Emhoff. Harris was Attorney General of California at the time.
They married in 2014 in Santa Barbara, California, in a ceremony officiated by Harris’ sister Maya. Kamala later officiated Emhoff’s son Cole’s ceremony in 2023. It was her first marriage and his second.

Emhoff was previously married to Kerstin Emhoff, with whom he has two children, Cole (29 years old) and Ella (25 years old).
The two have spoken at length about their warm relationship with Harris, famously calling her “Momala.” Both have supported Harris’ political aspirations.
