University of Applied Sciences students write to CM

Latur: Students of government polytechnics in Maharashtra have written a letter to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressing concern over their “educational loss” after the Supreme Court directed the government to stop the process of recruiting visiting faculty.

On July 23, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court directed the government to stop the recruitment process of visiting faculty in all polytechnic colleges in the state.

The court made this decision while hearing a petition from 144 visiting lecturers demanding permanent and indefinite employment.

Students from various colleges have written an email to CM Shinde expressing concern that the Supreme Court’s move will lead to educational loss.

“The lack of a permanent lecturer lets us down. We are concerned about our exam preparation and the overall quality of education we receive,” the students’ letter said.

For this reason, students from two departments would have to attend classes together, increasing their total number to around 150, which would affect the quality of teaching, it said.

Purushottam Bahetwar, secretary of the Tantraniketan Abhyagat Adhiyakhata Welfare Association, said that students would face a loss in their classes due to the suspension of recruitment of guest lecturers in colleges.

“We offered free courses so that students did not have to compromise on their studies, but were forced to stop classes…” said Sudhir Salunkhe, a visiting faculty at the Government Women Residential Polytechnic College in Latur.
