The UNA Computer Science and Mathematics building is completed

FLORENCE, Alabama (WAFF) – When students return to the University of North Alabama, they may notice that a brand new building is completed and ready for occupancy.

The computer science and mathematics building is completed and ready to host, among other things, courses for students.

The three-story building houses both the Sanders College of Business and Technology and the colleges of Computer Science and Information Systems.

Department head and professor Shane Banks said the most important thing about the building is to create more spaces for students to study and hang out together. He said there is nothing more important than students working together.

“On campus, we don’t really have academic buildings with a lot of common spaces for students to hang out, study and be together,” Dr. Banks said. “So that was something that was really important to us. And we think we’ve done a pretty good job of doing that. We hope students love it. We hope students take advantage of it and are here all the time and hang out together.”

Banks said it is the collaboration that really inspires the students.

The entire project cost around $20 million and took about two years.

The beauty of the building is that computer science students can now assemble some of the systems they will use for the rest of the year, Banks said.
