The Supreme Court on Tuesday criticised the West Bengal government for abusing its power to silence peaceful protests and accused it of mishandling the case.

The court has formed a 10-member national task force to ensure the safety of medical staff during the hearing of a case related to the RG Kar Hospital incident.

The Indian Medical Association welcomed the court’s intervention to ensure the safety of medical personnel and said it would cooperate with the committee appointed by the court on safety issues.

The CBI is expected to submit a status report on the crime as well as the acts of vandalism that took place at RG Kar Hospital on August 22 at the next court hearing.

The court, headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, described the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital on August 9 as “appalling” and “gruesome”. They also pointed out that the lack of security for women in the workplace amounts to a denial of their equal rights.

The CJI also pointed out that it is not just a crime but a systemic problem that needs to be addressed in a timely manner. He said, “As more and more women enter the workforce, the nation cannot wait for another rape until things change on the ground.”

Meanwhile, Congress MPs held a candlelight march in Siliguri to protest and demand justice from the government in the case.
