22 Names to Know for Ole Miss Season: No. 11 Trey Amos

OXFORD, miss. – As we prepare for the first week at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium to kick off the 2024 Ole Miss football season, The Rebel Gang The team introduces a player every day. We explain who they are, how they got here and what we expect from them.

Today we take a look at the No. 11 player on our list, DB Trey Amos

After the preview of TJ Dottery And Chris “Pooh” Paul Jr.we stay on the defensive side of the ball and move into the secondary, where Trey Amos will likely be the Rebels’ cornerback.

How did Trey Amos come to Ole Miss?

Trey Amos finished his high school career with a poor three-star rating and decided to pursue his passion for college football at the University of Louisiana, just 30 minutes from his hometown of New Iberia.

In his first two years with the Rajin Cajins, Amos failed to reach his full potential, recording just 24 tackles and one interception. Fortunately, the 6’1″ cornerback flipped the switch in the 2022 season and began to come out of his shell. He finished his junior season with 32 total tackles and an impressive seven pass deflections.

After his breakthrough season, Amos decided to enter the transfer portal, where he was recruited by Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. During his time with the Tide, Amos became a key rotation player, where he was able to learn from two NFL players, Terrion Arnold (first round selection) and Kool-Aid Mckinstry (second-round pick) while absorbing the knowledge of the best college football coach of all time.

After the departure of Nick Saban, Trey Amos entered the transfer portal and met with Pete Goldingwho had coached several of Amos’ teammates at Alabama. It wasn’t long before Amos announced his commitment to Ole Miss in mid-January to boost his draft chances with one year of eligibility remaining.

Career prospects

As mentioned above, Amos wasn’t able to take his game to the next level until his third year in college, when he became an elite defender. Although he didn’t have the opportunity to play a starting role at Alabama, he developed and matured in every way.

Amos was able to defend six passes last season while playing in both the SEC Championship and the College Football Playoff, two games he has a chance to play in two years in a row. It is also extremely noteworthy to recognize the performance of McKinstry and Arnold, with whom Trey coached for an entire year of his career.

Arnold finished 2023 with a whopping 63 tackles, 12 pass deflections, and five interceptions. McKinstry finished his year with 32 tackles and seven pass deflections. There’s no doubt that Amos will bring a similar pass-breaking ability to the field for Pete Golding this fall.

On the way to 2024

In his final year of eligibility, Amos will look to improve every aspect of his game to ensure he is selected in one of the early rounds of the 2024 draft.

Despite varying degrees of success throughout his college career, Amos never had the chance to play as a starting defensive back in the SEC. Now at Ole Miss, he finally has the opportunity to do so.

Camp Notes

So far in camp, we’ve seen Amos adapt quickly to Pete Golding’s complex defensive scheme, demonstrating his mental focus on the football field, while also engaging in one-on-one duels with Ole Miss receiver Tre Harris, arguably the SEC’s best wide receiver.

While he won’t win every single rep, Amos’ ability to man-mark will be crucial when Ole Miss faces SEC receivers just as talented as Tre Harris.

When the Rebels take the field on August 31, there is no doubt that the No. 9 defensive end will become an instant fan favorite. As always, stay tuned The Rebel Gang for more!
