Indians in Peter Pan ride at Disney World changed, Disneyland next

A scene in one of Disneyland’s original attractions is being modernized.

Peter Pan’s Flight has been a staple at Disneyland since opening day in 1955 and is one of the few original Walt Disney attractions still in operation.

However, one part of the ride will be reworked. The so-called “Never Land Tribe scene,” which for decades featured a headdressed chief next to drumming warriors and a seated Tiger Lily, will now feature more benign-looking drummers and a more active Tiger Lily dancing next to her grandmother. The chief has disappeared entirely.

The changes were already introduced at Walt Disney World last week. Visitors noticed them and posted photos. Below are before and after photos shared on social media.

Peter Pan’s Flight is based on Walt Disney’s 1953 animated classic. Peter Panwhich in turn is based on JM Barrie’s play and book of the same name. It should be noted that Peter Pan himself did not appear at all in the original attraction, nor did most of the Native Americans – with the exception of a captured Tiger Lily, who was seen in the final scene. The version most guests are familiar with today debuted in 1983 as part of an updated Fantasyland.

The recent WDW redesign of the attraction reportedly took just over a month. Timing for the Disneyland redesign has yet to be determined, according to park officials.

Disneyland officials point out that they consider themselves “constant learners” and make adjustments when they notice changes that can make the attractions “more authentic and relatable.”
