Newly approved product is designed to stop severe bleeding in emergency trauma patients within seconds

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a novel treatment which is supposed to stop heavy bleeding within seconds.

TRAUMAGEL – manufactured by Cresilon Inc., a Brooklyn-based biotechnology company – is a plant-based hydrogel that comes in a prefilled syringe, according to a press release.

First responders, paramedics and EMTs can use the gel to quickly stop severe blood loss from gunshot and stab wounds or other traumatic events.

Joe Landolina, CEO and co-founder of Cresilon, invented the gel in his dorm room when he was a 17-year-old chemical and biological engineering student at NYU.

Currently, many gauze bandages, powders and sponges are used to stop bleeding, but according to Landolina, these have their limitations.

“Compared to TRAUMAGEL, these products are difficult to work into wounds because they must be physically pressed into a gunshot wound by a first responder, which is painful and highly risky,” he told Fox News Digital via email.

TRAUMAGEL, which “has the color and texture of hummus,” works by instantly creating a mechanical barrier to bleeding at the wound, Landolina said.

“This barrier then allows the patient to quickly form their own natural clot that does not bind to TRAUMAGEL. This allows TRAUMAGEL to be removed afterwards without disturbing the clot.”

The gel should be removed within 24 hours.

Dr. Marc Siegel, chief medical analyst at Fox News and clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Centerconfirmed that this is the first gel-based hemostatic agent approved for hemostasis in the United States.

The product appears to represent a “major advancement” in the treatment of acute bleeding in the field – “even in head injuries and military operations (in combat) as well as gunshot and knife wounds outside of combat,” Siegel told Fox News Digital.
