NYT Connections today (Game No. 437) – the answers
The answers to today’s Connections Game No. 437 are…
- YELLOW: COVER WITH A THICK LAYER CAKE, COATING, PLASTERING, SMEARING
- GREEN: INFLATED THINGS BALLOON, BASKETBALL, FLOATIE, TIRES
- BLUE: CHART TYPES bar, bubble, line, circle
- PURPLE: CLASSIC COCKTAILS Sparkling, Punch, Sling, Sour
- My rating: Hard
- My result: Fail
This was, rather embarrassingly, the second connection failure I’ve had in just a couple of days. I think it’s difficult, but not impossible.
However, I feel like I was at a disadvantage compared to some others. FLOATIE is a term I’ve never heard before and I believe it’s a common term in the US that isn’t used in the UK where I’m from. Also, TIRE is spelled TYRE in the UK so I just understood it to mean “get tired” rather than “the thing that goes on wheels” and didn’t think about it applying to other inflatable items as well.
But still, I should have solved the problem, especially since I got the blue group, but obviously that was another bad day for me. Hope it was better for you.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. You have to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The upside is that you don’t technically have to solve the final puzzle, as you can solve it by process of elimination. Plus, you’re allowed to make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little wiggle room.
It is a bit more complicated than Wordle, however, and has many ways to trick you. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that could obscure the answers.
It can be played for free on desktop or mobile via the NYT Games site.
