What North Carolina residents need to know about voting in the 2024 general election

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) – Here’s what North Carolina residents should know ahead of the 2024 general election.

A new state law requires voters to show photo identification at the polling station.

These are the important election dates:

  • September 6, 2024: Postal voting documents by mail
  • September 17, 2024: National Voter Registration Day
  • October 11, 2024: Voter registration deadline (5:00 p.m.)
  • October 17, 2024: In-person early voting begins (same-day registration available)
  • 29.10.2024: Deadline for applying for postal voting documents (5 p.m.)
  • November 2, 2024: End of in-person early voting (3:00 p.m.)
  • November 5, 2024: Election Day (6:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.)
  • 05.11.2024: Deadline for submitting postal voting documents (7:30 p.m.)

Voters in North Carolina can vote in three ways:

  • Early Voting – Early voting is available from October 17 to November 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Absentee ballots – A request form for absentee ballots must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on October 29. These ballots can be cast online or on paper. Paper absentee ballots will be mailed on September 6 and must be completed and returned by 7:30 p.m. on November 5. Returned ballots must also be accompanied by a copy of a photo ID.
  • Election Day – Polls open on November 5 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Voters must cast their ballot at their assigned polling place. Voters must also show photo identification upon arrival at the polling place.

Curbside voting is available during early voting and on Election Day.
