DNC protests 2024: Chicago firefighters union protests against years of contract loss near Madison and Ashland on the Near West Side

CHICAGO (WLS) — Some Chicago firefighters are expected to protest on the Near West Side Tuesday afternoon, saying they have worked for years without a contract.

Members of the Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 2 say they have worked more than 1,100 days without a contract.

They want to hire more paramedics and expand their fleet with more ambulances.

The union has said it is trying to get its message across to Chicagoans and new visitors coming to the city this week for the Democratic National Convention.

They are expected to march at around 3 p.m. at the corner of Madison Street and Ashland Avenue.

The union had applied for a permit to hold a protest during the DNC, but its application was rejected twice. The city justified this with the proximity and the number of staff.

The union also has a mobile billboard that will travel around Chicago throughout the DNC, and it has rented two fire trucks that will also travel around the city with banners.

Further demonstrations are expected until Thursday.

Last month, paramedics and firefighters marched during NASCAR race weekend to raise awareness of their struggle.
