Cy-Fair ISD parents invite KPRC 2 on a ride to show how exhausting their daughter’s commute to school is

On Tuesday, a concerned mother took our ReChelle Turner for a ride to show her how exhausting her daughter’s commute to school really is.

Brandy Robinson lives at the Highpoint at Cypresswood Apartments on Mandolin Drive. She met Turner at 6:25 this morning to show us the route.

Her daughter is 14 years old and a ninth-grader at Cy Creek High School. She lives about 1.4 miles from the school. When she leaves the apartment, her daughter has to walk down Cypresswood Road.

“There are no sidewalks. There are no sidewalks the entire way to school,” she told Turner.

From there, her daughter would have to walk all the way to SH 249, keeping an eye out for motorists on the access road.

“This is a big intersection, so should she walk through the grass or whatever,” she said.

While driving, Turner and Robinson spotted several students walking along the access road.

“Unfortunately, they have nowhere to go,” she said.

Robinson says the bus cuts are unacceptable for her daughter and other students.

“This is not acceptable and not safe,” she said.

Robinson says it would take her daughter 30 minutes to walk the five-minute drive from her apartment.

“You can’t even walk here. Why is she running into traffic now,” she said.

What did you find out from the district? I know you said you contacted them. Did they tell you anything?

“Pretty much roadblocks,” Robinson said.

You go to work every morning. What other options do you have to take your daughter to school?

“I have no choice. I know there is Uber, but even with Uber, I don’t know if they allow minors to ride alone. It’s not even certain,” Robinson said.

KPRC 2 contacted Cy-Fair ISD late Monday morning about Robinson’s situation.

A district spokesman said:

“The area you referred to is eligible for transportation to Cypress Creek High School. The board’s resolution on hazardous traffic conditions includes all areas within two miles of Cypress Creek where students would have to cross FM 1960 or SH 249.”

We also provided Robinson’s contact information to the district and she is waiting for a call to find out if her daughter is eligible for a bus ride.

So if the district is unable to establish a bus service in this area, what options do you have as a parent?

“She couldn’t go to school here because I would have to worry every day about how she would get home, how she would get to school. I just don’t have an answer,” she said.
