McMorrow launches Project 2025 at DNC • Michigan Advance

State Senator Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak) got prime time airtime Monday night as the Democratic National Convention began at the United Center in Chicago.

McMorrow used her five minutes to talk about Project 2025the authoritarian plan for a possible second term of former President Donald Trump. Written by the right-wing Heritage Foundation, it aims to radically redistribute the powers of the federal government. These include: Trump was able to mobilize the US military against political dissidents; ban the shipping of abortion pills as part of the implementation of a national abortion banto privatize Medicare; and more than 50,000 civil servants were dismissed and replaced by loyalists.

Carrying an oversized hardcover copy of Project 2025, McMorrow said the plan was essentially aimed at making Trump an American dictator.

“If Donald Trump returns to the White House, he will fire officials like intelligence officers, engineers and even federal prosecutors if he decides they don’t serve his personal agenda,” she said. “You’re talking about replacing the entire federal government with an army of loyalists who are accountable only to Donald Trump.”

McMorrow also warned that Project 2025 would weaponize the U.S. Department of Justice to allow Trump to retaliate against his political opponents.

“That’s not how it works in America. That’s how it works in dictatorships. And that’s exactly what Donald Trump and his great lackeys have in mind,” McMorrow said. “An expansion of presidential power such as no president has ever had or should have.”

McMorrow added that because of the Supreme Court “handpicked by Trump,” he would be protected from prosecution even if he broke the law.

“We believe in a system that works for everyone, not in destroying a system to serve one little, selfish man. The truth is, there is only one way to stop him and Project 2025. How do we do that? We elect Kamala Harris this November,” she said.

Monday night was not McMorrow’s first appearance on the national stage. She first attracted widespread attention in April 2022 when in a speech in the Michigan Senate, she emphatically denounced a donation email from a Republican colleague in which she and other Democrats insinuated that they were abusing and sexualizing children because they supported LGBTQ+ rights. The video went viral and even sparked a Phone call from President Joe Biden.
