Michael John LaChiusa’s musical returns to Off-Broadway with an all-AAPI cast and creative team via Out of the Box Theatrics.

Out of the Box Theatrics’ upcoming off-Broadway revival of Michael John LaChiusa’s See what I want to see is in rehearsals, performances are scheduled to begin September 4, with opening night September 18 at 154 Christopher Street. Watch Ann Sanders, who stars as The Medium and Aunt Monica, sing “There Will Be a Miracle” from the score above.

The performances last until September 29th.

The AAPI cast also includes Marina Kondo (Consequence) as Kesa, the wife and an actress; Kelvin Moon Loh (Beetlejuice) as husband and auditor; Zachary Noah Piser (Dear Evan Hansen) as caretaker and priest; and Sam Simahk (Into the forest) as Morito, The Thief and A Reporter. Aaron Albano and Bebe Browning round out the group as cover.

The new production, directed by Emilio Ramos, features puppetry by Nikki Calonge and Takemi Kitamura. Justin Otaki Perkins is puppetry director. Kondo also provided Japanese translations for the revival.

The creative team also includes music director Adam Rothenberg, choreographer Paul McGill, set designer Emmie Finckel, costume designer Siena Zoë Allen, puppet designer Tom Lee (puppets made by Chicago Puppet Studio), lighting designer Kat C. Zhou, sound designer Germán Martínez and prop designer Samantha Shoffner. Kyra Bowie is stage manager and Abi Rowe is assistant stage manager.

Originally premiered Off-Broadway at The Public in 2005, See what I want to see is based on short stories by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, including the well-known Rashomon. Both acts begin with a prologue inspired by Akutagawa’s “Kesa and Morito,” about a pair of fatally quarrelsome lovers. The first act of the work is largely a retelling of Rashomonwhile the second act of Akutagawa’s Dragon: The Story of the Old Potterthe latter has been modernized and focuses on the events of September 11, 2001.
