Can you stop on a highway in heavy traffic?

ORLANDO, Florida. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road each week and helps Orlando-area residents become better drivers through better education.

News 6 viewer Kathy asked, “Can I stop in the merging lane when merging if traffic is too heavy?”

“I will never understand why merging is so difficult in our area. Maybe because it requires teamwork and many drivers are simply unaware of their surroundings,” he said.

When merging onto a road, you first need to get up to speed. Once you’re up to speed, you need to find a safe gap to merge into the main traffic. Sometimes traffic is so dense that it’s almost impossible to merge, and if other drivers don’t let you merge, it adds to a frustrating situation.

A driver merging does not have the right of way to merge into traffic. If merging were not possible, a driver would have to stop before merging into traffic.

“But you already know what I’m going to say. The zippering procedure allows mainline and merger traffic to merge into one in an orderly manner. The driver on the mainline must be alert enough to recognize the merger traffic and allow the zippering procedure,” he said.
