Primary elections begin in South Florida – what you should know

FL. – Tuesday is primary day, and voters in South Florida are flocking to the polls with several key races at stake.

Many have already cast their vote by mail, but those who vote in person on Tuesday should keep an eye on some important elections.

In Miami-Dade, incumbent Mayor Daniella Levine Cava is trying to keep her seat despite facing challengers such as Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid and former Surfside Mayor Shlomo Danzinger.

A total of seven candidates are competing for the mayor’s office. To avoid a runoff election, the winner must receive more than 50% of the votes.

Miami-Dade County is also hosting its first sheriff election in over 60 years. 11 Republican and four Democratic candidates are running against each other. The top candidates from each primary will face off in November.

In the Democratic primary for Broward County Sheriff, incumbent Sheriff Gregory Tony is running against Steve Geller, David Howard and Al Pollock.

The winner will likely secure the sheriff’s office in November, but in predominantly Democratic Broward County, it is almost certain that the Democratic winner will become sheriff after the November election.

Meanwhile, in the race for the U.S. Senate, former U.S. Representative Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is running against incumbent Republican Senator Rick Scott, who is also facing opponents in the Republican primary.

In addition to electing one candidate from each party for the U.S. Senate, Monroe County voters will choose their candidate for 5th District county commissioner on Tuesday.

They will also make their selections for the Republican members of the State Committee and the Republican candidate for Monroe County Supervisor of Elections.

Two seats on the commission are up for election in Key West.

The polling stations are open on Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
