A new furniture store could find its way to the capital.
On August 10, the City of Topeka granted an interior modification permit to HomeGoods, a chain of home furnishings stores located at Wanamaker Square, 1900 SW Wanamaker Road.
The permit states that the contractor for the project will be Innovative Construction Solutions, a retail construction company based in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The Capital-Journal reached out to Innovative Construction Solutions but did not receive a response.
Arielle Abramek, marketing director at HomeGoods, said the company has not yet announced a new store for Topeka.
The Capital-Journal reported in December 2023 that the store’s intention to open a store at the former Bed, Bath and Beyond site along the Wanamaker Corridor in Topeka was communicated to the mayor and members of the Topeka City Council.
Proposal for unchanged VAT in shopping centres
The measure would revise an agreement the mayor and city council approved in 2019 that creates a community improvement district to allow Fort Wayne, Indiana-based equity investment group Wanamaker LLC to increase sales taxes by 1 cent on the dollar at several retail properties on the southeast corner of SW 17th and Wanamaker Road.
This agreement allows this tax to be levied on these properties between January 1, 2020, and January 31, 2041. It was approved by the Topeka City Council on December 19.
“This will only limit their ability to collect sales tax, which has increased dramatically over the last two years,” said attorney Bob Johnson of the Kansas City, Missouri-based Polsinelli law firm. “As they pointed out, this also means more sales tax for the city of Topeka.”

HomeGoods currently has five stores across Kansas, according to its website. Those locations include the following:
- Lawrence: 3311 Iowa St.
- Kansas City, Kansas: 1817 Village West Parkway.
- Olathe: 14645 119th Street.
- Lexington: 9650 Quivira Street.
- Overland Park: 6261 West 135th St.
