DULUTH – The I-35 and I-535 connections through the Twin Ports Interchange project in Duluth will open Tuesday morning, August 20.
I-535 was closed for construction in 2021 and the reopening date was postponed due to the discovery of human remains.
A temporary one-lane bypass has been constructed at the I-535/Garfield Avenue interchange to facilitate the reopening of the I-535 connection between Wisconsin and Minnesota.
A press release from the Minnesota Department of Transportation urges drivers to slow down, use caution on the bypass and watch for merging traffic on I-35.
The Highway 53 to 21st Avenue West bridges, providing access to Lincoln Park, will be completed this fall. Highway 53’s interchanges with I-35 and I-535 are expected to be completed in fall 2025.

Our newsroom occasionally reports under the name “Staff.” The “Staff” name is often used when rewriting basic news briefs from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure that requires little or no reporting. Sometimes this name is used when a story has multiple authors or when the story consists of compiling previously reported news from various sources. When outside sources are used, this is noted in the story.
