Kerala's Chief Minister asks banks to write off loans of Wayanad landslide victims

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prime Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that Banks should be prepared to loan of the victims of Wayanad disasterHe was speaking at the meeting of the State Level Banking Committee, which was convened to discuss Relief measures in the wake of Monday’s disaster.
“Wayanad has experienced an unprecedented disaster. The majority of those affected are in agricultural activities“The disaster has led to the loss of arable land and drastically changed the topography of the region,” the Prime Minister said.
Most of the victims had taken loans for various purposes such as education, housing and agriculture. Some have lost all their family members, which should not be forgotten. From the banks’ point of view, the Financial impact This intervention will be minimal, said the CM.
“Without expecting the government to repay the loans written off under normal circumstances, the banks should support the aid measures on their own. Kerala Bankwhich covers all loans from Victims of the disasteris exemplary. It is hoped that other banks will follow this model,” added Vijayan.
Initially, the government provided Rs 10,000 each to the victims as temporary relief through banks. However, Kerala Gramin Bank in Chooralmala has deducted EMI even from these relief funds. Banks should not act so mechanically in such situations, he said.
The Chief Minister, in the presence of senior officials from institutions like the Reserve Bank of India and Nabard, directed the banks to take necessary steps to write off loans. He pointed out that the country and the world are standing by the state government in rehabilitating the disaster victims and hence the banks should also take such steps for the benefit of the victims.
Chief Secretary V Venu, Deputy Chief Secretary Sharada Muraleedharan and representatives of various banks attended the meeting.
