WASHINGTON: Congress republican submitted a formal application on Monday for the Impeachment proceedings by US President Joe Biden, who used the opening day of the Democratic Party Convention to launch a political attack that is unlikely to gain any serious traction.
The report by three influential committees of the Republican-led House of Representatives accuses Biden of corruption connected with his son hunter‘s foreign business.
Jim Jordan, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said the investigation had shown “conclusively” that Biden “abused his public office for the private financial gain of the Biden family and his business associates.”
“President Biden’s legacy is one of abuse of power, corruption, and obstruction of justice. The evidence our impeachment trial has produced is the strongest case for the removal of a sitting president that the House of Representatives has ever considered,” said James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.
However, there is no evidence that Biden ever abused his office to benefit his son or was involved in Hunter’s business dealings. A document based on inferences and insinuations about ties between father and son provided no solid evidence.
Biden – who is scheduled to deliver a farewell speech at the Democratic National Convention and pass the political baton to his vice president, Kamala Harris – has repeatedly denied supporting his son’s business ventures, including in Ukraine and China.
For years, Republicans have used Hunter Biden’s foreign connections and his chaotic private life as a recovering drug addict to embarrass the president.
However, the marathon attempts to impeach Biden – seen by many as an attempt at revenge for the two impeachments against Republican Donald Trump during his presidency – never came anywhere close to an actual vote in the House of Representatives.
The Republicans have only a razor-thin majority and would likely not be able to reach a unanimous agreement on Biden’s impeachment, risking a serious embarrassment.
