Black Myth Wukong: “Cannot absorb spirits without guidance” explained

Early in Black Myth: Wukong, you may receive the notification “Cannot absorb spirits without guidance” After defeating some of the Yaoguai bosses, you’re rightly wondering what that even means? Luckily, we’re here to help. Below, we’ll explain everything you need to know about absorbing spirits in Black Myth: Wukong, and where to find the missing guide.

What does “Cannot absorb spirits without guidance” mean?

spirits are Yaoguai demons that you can summon in battle in Black Myth: Wukong, and you’ll get a fair amount of them throughout the game by defeating the various subbosses known as Yaoguai Chieftains. One of the first spirits you can obtain is the Wandering Wight, an early, optional boss in Chapter 1’s Forest of Wolves, as well as the frog subboss Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang. When you defeat them, however, you may find that you can’t absorb their spirits, so what’s going on?

Before you can absorb ghosts, you must speak to the blessed pumpkin masterwhich is very close to the ‘Snake Path“Shrine in the Bamboo Grove in Chapter 1.”

To get to his location, you must defeat the Yaoguai King Lingxuzi and proceed through the forest until you reach the Snake Path Shrine of the Bamboo Grove on the main story path. Go up the stairs next to the shrine and before you cross the bridge, go left and you will see the Blessed Gourd Master directly ahead of you.

When you approach him, a cutscene will appear and it will automatically upgrade your pumpkin So you can now absorb those pesky spirits. In the future, when you approach a blue spirit after defeating a Yaoguai Chief, you will be able to successfully absorb it and use its special abilities in battle.

And don’t be afraid of the spirits you may have fought and defeated before receiving this important “instruction”. When you return to a shrine, you have the opportunity toBringing back ghosts‘ the next time you offer incense to open the shrine menu. Select this and you can add any spirits you’ve defeated directly to your arsenal, as shown in the screenshots below.
