Damn it, NYT. Putting WIND in a puzzle with BLOW, DRAFT, GUST, and PUFF is guaranteed to cause problems for anyone stupid enough to fall into your trap – and that’s exactly what I did. Damn it!
To make matters worse, the yellow group was the easiest of the four today, although it cost me two mistakes. I had already discovered the Dr. Seuss connection for purple, with POP (in socks), CAT (in hat), and GRINCH, but couldn’t figure out what the last one was. So I left that and focused on the others, and after my brief foray into wind-related answers, I was able to solve yellow and green.
That left five answers: TAURUS, LEO, TORTOISE, CRAB and ARIES. One of those went to Dr. Seuss, the other four made up the blue group. I thought about it for a long time, then discovered the zodiac group and was able to play TORTOISE to complete purple by default. And in case you were wondering, it was Yertle the turtle…

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. You have to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The upside is that you don’t technically have to solve the final puzzle, as you can solve it by process of elimination. Plus, you’re allowed to make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little wiggle room.
It is a bit more complicated than Wordle, however, and has many ways to trick you. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that could obscure the answers.
It can be played for free on desktop or mobile via the NYT Games site.
