Built to withstand wind speeds of 200 mph: “Hurricane-proof” new build in Florida for sale for .85 million | Real estate news and insights

A newly built home on a golf course in Boca Raton, Florida, that is said to be hurricane-proof hit the market Tuesday with an asking price of $6.85 million.

Completed this year, the house is made entirely of steel beams and poured concrete and was built using insulated concrete forms, allowing the house to withstand wind speeds of over 320 kilometers per hour, said developer Meir Kroll.

“There’s this picture (of Florida’s west coast after Hurricane Michael in 2018) with all these houses on the beach that are completely destroyed, and then there’s this one house that’s still standing. That house was an (insulated concrete) house,” Kroll said.

Senada Adzem of Douglas Elliman, who brought the home to market on Tuesday with her colleague Brian Ross, said the potential environmental impact of a property has become increasingly important to her clients.

“They want to know they’re safe. They want to know that if they go away in the summer, their home will still be there when they come back,” she said.

Kroll moved from Los Angeles to Boca Raton in 2021, where he worked as a luxury developer and built homes for sports agent Rich Paul and MLS player Javier Hernandez. Kroll bought the property to build his first project in Florida in 2022 for $840,000, public records show.

With its contemporary-style white exterior and dark wood accents, the 7,000-square-foot home stands out in the country club community of Boca Grove, where many homes with tile roofs and Mediterranean style were built in the 1980s and 1990s.

Instead, the collaboration with Spanish architect Jorge Bibiloni Studio for this house took inspiration from the villas in Mallorca, where Bibiloni is based.

“His design aesthetic is warm, contemporary, but minimalist,” Kroll said. “There are a lot of speculative projects in Florida that are eccentric and over-designed. I think sometimes beauty lies in subtlety.”

The elegant style with wood accents continues inside the two-story home, which features five bedrooms, seven bathrooms and a powder room. The master suite includes two large walk-in closets and a separate formal living room.

Sliding glass doors on the first level lead to a covered patio with a full summer kitchen, outdoor dining area, and heated pool and spa. A sundeck runs the length of the second level and offers golf course views.
