Watsonville hosts community bike ride with elected officials – Santa Cruz Sentinel

WATSONVILLE — There’s no doubt that Santa Cruz County is definitely a biking community. With the abundance of trails and often temperate temperatures, there’s nothing better than hopping on a bike and getting some fresh air while pedaling uphill, downhill or on flat ground.

There is also an opportunity to meet with local elected officials, and that is exactly what Watsonville offers with its Community Bike Ride Saturday.

The public is invited to join Mayor Vanessa Quiroz-Carter and Santa Cruz County Executive Felipe Hernandez in a bike ride aimed at promoting physical and mental health, combating climate change and building a stronger community.

The event begins at 10:30 a.m. at the East Lake Village Shopping Center, 936 E. Lake Ave., with a bike check and ride overview. Free helmets will be provided to the first 50 participants. At 11 a.m., bikers will set off in groups and have the choice of a 2-mile or 6-mile route. From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., bikers will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on improving road safety with Quiroz-Carter and Hernandez over a burrito lunch.

“This is a great opportunity for the community to participate in discussions about how to make Watsonville safer for cyclists and pedestrians,” county officials wrote in a press release.

This event is sponsored by Santa Cruz County, the City of Watsonville, Bike Santa Cruz County and the Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency. For more information, email County Supervisor Analyst Celeste Gutierrez at [email protected] or call (831) 454-2200.
