Writing materials for seat on the County Commission

A primary race for a seat on the Saline County Commission, in which candidates were separated by just 20 votes, will not end until the general election in November.

The Republican primary for the Saline County Commission District 2 seat ended with Annie Grevas defeating Kathleen Malone Crouch by 17 votes out of more than 1,100 total ballots cast. As of Tuesday morning, eight provisional ballots remained uncounted, not enough to change the outcome.

According to the Saline County Clerk’s Office, Malone Crouch officially filed her candidacy on Monday. She also has the option of requesting a recount, but she would have to pay for it.

Salina County Clerk Jamie Doss tells KSAL News this is the first time locally that someone has officially registered as an ineligible candidate. Under a new state law recently passed, ineligible candidates must now register at the local election office. There is no fee to register as an ineligible candidate.

Although Malone Crouch had to file paperwork, her name will still not be on the ballot. Anyone wishing to vote for her must write it in.

There will be several contested local elections in the November general election. These include:

United States House of Representatives, District 1

  • Tracey Mann (R))
  • Paul Buskirk (D)

Kansas Senate District 24

  • JR Claeys (R)
  • John Baker (D)

Kansas House of Representatives, 69th District

  • Clarke Sanders (R)
  • Lori Blake (UK)

District Commissioner for Saline County, District 2

  • Annie Grevas (R)
  • Kathleen Malone Crouch (entry)
