NIH awards .3 million grant to Ohio State to develop clinical and translational scientists

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The National Institutes of Health has awarded Ohio State University a $4.38 million grant to support newly trained clinician scientists pursuing careers in medical research.

The five-year award will fund the Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s K12 program, a mentored research and education program for young clinical and translational scientists.

“This career development fellowship provides early career scientists with important training, mentoring and resources to help them achieve their career and research goals,” said K. Luan Phan, MD, principal investigator, clinical professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and chief of psychiatry services at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “Clinical and translational scientists are an essential part of health care because of their collective ability to identify and conduct research that fills gaps in patient care.”

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s K12 program provides research funding, salary support, and training in clinical and translational science. The K12 program provides aspiring researchers the opportunity to advance under the guidance of experienced researchers.

In 2024, four faculty members will be awarded the K12 Prize. It is open to early career researchers engaged in clinical or translational research.

New name for Translation Centre

The Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences is now called the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The new name is more consistent with the institute’s mission to advance research and improve the health of all.

“Over the past two decades, the Institute has been a critical resource for the science and research community at Ohio State,” said Julie Johnson, PharmD, director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, associate dean for clinical and translational research at the Ohio State College of Medicine and associate vice president for research at Ohio State. “Our goal for the future is to more fully support the entire clinical and translational research community on campus and at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and to facilitate and streamline research discoveries that improve the health of all.”

The research reported in this press release was supported by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under grant number UM1TR004548.
