Cadillac’s new electric concept car has doors that open like butterfly wings,

The Detroit-based automaker General MotorsCadillac The luxury brand unveiled a new EV concept called Opulent Velocity last week.

What happened: The vehicle, a concept, will not go into production, but is an “experience-based design study” with a low silhouette and the charm of a hypercar.

The most important design element, however, are the two butterfly doors that open upwards and outwards like wings to let passengers in. The luxurious four-passenger coupe boasts a bright, gold-plated pearlescent tone on the outside and a metallic dark blue finish on the inside.

“Opulent Velocity is inspired by the dynamic design elements of motorsports in an aerodynamic 2+2 body shape,” said Magalie Debellis, manager of Cadillac Advanced Design. The company has equipped it with a 3D widescreen display, a fully digital cockpit and a racing-inspired steering wheel design, among other features.

A similar equivalent to these doors in a production, affordable electric vehicle is the Tesla Model X, which has upward-opening falcon-wing rear doors. However, the cheaper variant of the Model X starts at $79,990.

Why it is important: Cadillac is currently supporting GM’s overall electric vehicle sales in the U.S. after it stopped production of the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle in December.

GM sold 21,930 electric vehicles in the second quarter, and the Lyriq SUV accounted for 7,294 of total sales, even though the company has only seven electric vehicles in its lineup.
