Rahul draws attention to the plight of gig workers and publishes a video of his ride in an Uber taxi

New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Parliament Rahul Gandhi on Monday highlighted the plight of gig workers and assured that Congress governments in the states would take concrete measures to resolve their problems while the INDIA bloc would work towards implementing them nationwide.

Gandhi made these remarks on X, where he posted a video of a recent Uber cab ride and his conversation with the driver. “Low income and inflation ruining lives – this is the fate of India’s gig workers! Talking to Sunil Upadhyay ji during an Uber ride and after meeting his family, I got an idea of the problems faced by gig workers like taxi drivers and delivery drivers in the country,” the former Congress leader said in Hindi on X.

“They are barely living hand to mouth – with no savings and no basis for their family’s future. To solve this problem, the Congress state governments will take concrete steps,” he said. The INDIA Janbandhan will do everything in its power to ensure its implementation across the country, Gandhi added.

In the video, which is over 11 minutes long, Gandhi is seen taking a taxi ride after booking a cab through the Uber app. He chats with the taxi driver, who hails from Etah in Uttar Pradesh, and asks him about his problems. The taxi driver tells Gandhi that he has to survive on minimal resources as drivers are paid poor wages and he has no social security.

He also talks about thoughts of returning to his home village and about not being able to make ends meet in Delhi. Gandhi ends the journey and presents a gift to the taxi driver’s children.

The day after the ride, Gandhi is seen having lunch with the taxi driver’s family at a restaurant in Delhi. Gandhi assured them that Congress governments in several states are considering gig workers and that he wants to ensure social security for the drivers and their families.
