High school student designs shop window for young artists

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – A high school senior is calling on all aspiring artists to showcase their work in a professional exhibition space. She has a plan to create a platform and opportunities for yet-to-be-established artists to showcase their talents.

Harmony Koda, a 12th grader at Loveless Academic Magnet Program (LAMP) High School, has created the “Imagination Station” for River Region artists to showcase their creativity through painting, drawing, mixed media, photography, digital art, sculpture and other forms. The exhibit is currently accepting submissions.

“My main goals for this exhibition are to help amateur artists feel more confident in their art and to create a greater appreciation for artists in the community,” she said. “I want to see more artists who are confident in their talents, especially teenagers who suffer from self-confidence issues. I also want this exhibition to help adults who may feel like they shouldn’t make art because it’s childish to regain their confidence and start making more art again.”

Koda developed the idea for “Imagination Station” after showcasing her own art in an exhibition during a free digital illustration workshop for high school students offered by AUM’s Department of Fine Arts over the summer.

The Imagination Station exhibition is open to artists ages 12 and older who live in Montgomery, Elmore, and Autauga counties and have not previously participated in an invited and/or juried solo exhibition. Artwork submitted must be original works created within the past three years. Selected works will be on display in the Imagination Station exhibition at AUM’s Cason McDermott Art Gallery from October 8-31.

All entries can be submitted online (https://aum.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9Stq05gGKjJZrRs) until Tuesday, September 3 at 5:00 p.m. There is no entry fee and each entry must include an image of the artwork as well as the title, medium, dimensions, creation date, and artist contact information. Two-dimensional works must not exceed 28 inches on the longest side (in the frame) and three-dimensional entries must not exceed 5 feet in height and width.

Artists may submit up to three works for consideration. Digital images should be 960 pixels and 72 dpi on the longest side and saved as a JPG file. Each image file should include the artist’s last name and the title of the artwork (e.g. Smith_the_shallows.jpg).

Artists will be notified of their selection for the exhibition via email by Tuesday, September 10. A panel of final-year AUM art students will serve as judges and select the best of the exhibition, as well as the second and third place winners, who will be honored at an exhibition reception.
