In providing an update on the project and the fact that Netflix gave it the green light in August 2024, diversity reported that unnamed sources said the 3D animation series would be sonically similar to the two newer Ghost Hunters Movies. This information, which has not yet been confirmed by Netflix, could mean that Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trevor Spengler (Finn Wolfhard) will return in some form. If so, it could be a story where they expand the Ghostbusters further or go back to basics.

Elliott Kalan will be the writer and executive producer of the Ghostbusters animated series

Kalan will not be alone in the latest animated version of Ghost Hunterslike Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, the director Ghostbusters: Life After Death And The Frozen EmpireNot only will they have co-written the screenplay for both films, but they will also serve as executive producers through their company Ghost Corps, Inc. However, there is no information yet on who will direct the series, so we will have to wait and see.

Although it seems like the animated series is just getting started, it has actually been in the works for several years, and Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman have been involved the whole time. These comments also date from March 2024, which means Kenan, Reitman and Elliott Kalan could be much further along now that everything is finalized The Frozen Empire.
The Netflix show will be the third Ghostbusters animated series
When this animated series premieres sometime in the future, it will be the third animated film in the franchise.
It all started in 1986 with The real Ghostbusterswhich we consider to be one of the best cartoon series of all time. The series ran from 1986 to 1991 on ABC and in syndication, focusing on the core group from the films, although they were all voiced by different actors. The show was a huge success and spawned countless toys, games, and other merchandise, such as a glow-in-the-dark pillowcase that some of us may or may not still own.
A little more than 10 years later, Extreme Ghost Hunters premiered in syndication format, but did not run as long and was canceled after only one season, while its predecessor had seven seasons.
There was a recent attempt to adapt the franchise into an animated series, but nothing has been heard about the project for years. In 2016 IndieWire reported that Sony Pictures Animation was working on a show titled Ghostbusters: Ecto-Force and would have followed a group of futuristic ghost hunters traveling the world in the near future. The show was reportedly set to air in early 2018, but that never happened.
