US Open 2024: Liam Broady, Heather Watson and Lily Miyazaki are among the Brits in the qualification | Tennis news

Ten British players are on the qualifying list for the US Open, including Liam Broady, Heather Watson and Lily Miyazaki.

Sonay Kartal and Francesca Jones are the other Brits involved in the women’s qualification, while Billy Harris, Jacob Fearnley, Paul Jubb, Jan Choinski and Oliver Crawford bolster the numbers on the men’s side.

In the women’s qualifying round Heather Watson is the most experienced of the group at 32 – and has the highest career ranking (in 2015) of 38 – but she has never made it past the first round in her ten previous visits to Flushing Meadows and has failed to qualify in the last two years.

Lily Miyazaki qualified last year and secured a win on her US Open debut against Margarita Betova to reach the second round. This year she is seeded 31st in qualifying.

Sonay Kartal might be a familiar name to many after she reached the third round at Wimbledon earlier this summer, defeating 29th seed Sorana Cirstea. Franziska Jones is attempting to qualify for the US Open for only the second time after reaching the second quarter of 2021.

In the men’s qualifying round Liam Broady is trying to recover from an ankle problem that has affected his season. He has never made the first round of the US Open before, but was a finalist as a junior in 2012.

Billy Harris is seeded seventh in qualifying after reaching his first ATP quarterfinal at Queen’s Club in the summer and then going one better a week later in Eastbourne to reach his first ATP semifinal.

Harris beats fellow countryman Jacob Fearnley at this race on the south coast, who is unlucky to meet a Brit again at the start of his qualifying campaign, as he is against Paul Jubb.

Both players impressed during the grass-court season this summer, with Fearnley winning his first ATP Challenger title at the Nottingham Open before taking a set from Novak Djokovic to reach the second round of Wimbledon.

Paul Jubb defeated world number 14 Ben Shelton to reach his first ATP Tour semifinal at the Mallorca Championships.

Jubb, meanwhile, claimed his first top-20 victory when he defeated Ben Shelton at the Mallorca Championships to reach the ATP semifinals for the first time.
