Merce Lemon recently released the title track of her upcoming album Watch me drive the dogs wildavailable September 27th via Darling Recordings. The LP’s final track is described by the artist as “a lonely ballad of desolate projection into an unknown future, forever protected by the comforting green of Pittsburgh’s hills, rivers, bridges and houses.” “His song is really the first time I collaborated with anyone from the early stages of writing,” Merce says, “my friend Spencer Smith, who played keyboards in my band at the time, sent me a voice memo with a chord progression he’d written. I’d been playing with an idea for a song based on a story my friend had told me about Michael Hurley, but I hadn’t found a way to write the lyrics. This song came to life when I sang it on repeat over Spencer’s piano until the melody stuck.”
The video was directed by Matthew Reed, who has painted several of MJ Lenderman’s album covers. Merce says, “I asked my buddies Colin Miller and Landon George if they would dance to my most dramatic song down in Haw Creek in cut-off shirts with knives in a non-creepy way. They asked our mutual friend Walker Rider to send us footage of him flexing his muscles. I put it all together.”
