UPDATE: Juan Pedro Lopez escapes horrific Getxo crash without major consequences

The 79th edition of the Circuito de Getxo seemed to be heading for an exciting finale in the Basque city when a group of 20 favourites emerged at the top.

Things were looking good for Lidl-Trek’s Juan Pedro López on the descent from the penultimate climb of the day, the Alto del Pike, but unfortunately a nasty crash on the descent dashed all the Spaniard’s hopes. “I just saw the video of my crash today… how lucky I was…” López reflected on the scary crash in a short X-message: “This is cycling and we will come back in the best way! Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.”

When López lost control of his bike at the front of the group of favorites, there was also a chain reaction in the field, because Anthon Charmig of the Astana Qazaqstan team, who had been sitting in the fourth wheel for a while, panicked slightly and also fell to the ground.

The Dane was taken to hospital for medical examination, after which his team gave a brief update: “Anthon Charmig was examined at Urduliz Hospital and no fracture or other serious injury was found. The rider will spend one night in hospital and fly home tomorrow.”
