A fanfare of over 100 people lined Hanalei Pier to welcome the legendary voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa as the traditional Polynesian double-hulled boat and its crew arrived around 10:30 a.m. Saturday after a 21-hour crossing from Sand Island, Oʻahu.
Among the crowd welcoming the canoe was original Hōkūleʻa crew member John Kruse of Kauaʻi, Keiki and Hula Hālau.
Hanalei is the first stop on the Pae ‘Āina Statewide Sail. Over the next two weeks, the crew of the Hōkūleʻa will host canoe tours and activities for hundreds of students and the community while docked in Hanalei and Nāwiliwili.
Hōkūleʻa’s sail to Hanalei was captained by Tamiko Fernelius with a crew of nine including Jonah Apo, Kai Hoshijo, Solomon Kaupu, Kanako Uchino Dumaran, Tehinamai Tafiti, Mahinalani Cavalieri, Leilani Aldrich, Shoko Ogata and Hōkū Pihana.
The captain of the escort boat Kōlea was Noland Keaulana, the crew consisted of Allen Mozo and Jordan Jacobson.

The 7-month voyage around the Hawaiian Islands will cover 3,000 miles, with stops in 31 ports and 34 destinations before Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia continue the circumnavigation of the Pacific with Moananuiākea in March 2025.
