Donald Trump is coming back to Arizona.

The former president and Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election will visit the southern border on Thursday and hold a rally in Glendale on Friday, his first trip to the swing state since Vice President Kamala Harris was named the Democratic nominee.

Trump will appear at the Desert Diamond Arena, the same venue where Harris held a rally last week. The event is being co-hosted by conservative groups Turning Point PAC and Turning Point Action.

“President Donald Trump and JD Vance will fight to ease the financial pressure on households and restore law and order in Arizona!” said a press release from the Trump campaign team. “We can make America great again by tackling lawlessness head-on, stopping the endless flow of illegal immigrants across our southern border, and reversing the damaging effects of inflation by restoring prosperity to the people.”

Trump’s visit takes place the same week as the Democratic Party Convention, which takes place in Chicago from Monday to Thursday.

The news that Trump was planning a trip to Arizona was first reported by the Arizona Republic.

One day before his rally, Trump will visit the US-Mexico border in Cochise County. He will hold an event on immigration in Montezuma Pass, his campaign team announced on Sunday. Sierra Vista Mayor Clea McCaa and Police Chief Chris Hiser will accompany Trump on his border visit, a city spokesman said.

Arizona is an “emerging problem” for Trump, a longtime political observer recently said, and Trump’s own allies say he should visit the state more often.

There were significant shifts in the presidential race in Arizona; Trump lost there in 2020 by less than 11,000 votes.

A New York Times-Siena College poll released Saturday showed Harris gaining ground in Arizona, with Harris receiving 50% of the vote in the poll to Trump’s 45%. That’s a marked change from earlier this summer, when President Joe Biden was trailing Trump in Arizona polls.

Harris has given the Democrats in Arizona new momentum, her campaign team said. The vice president gathered 15,000 supporters in Glendale on August 9 with her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Younger support: These Gen Z voters in Arizona are supporting Kamala Harris. Here’s why

As Republicans attack Democrats on immigration during the election campaign, Harris’ campaign team is touting new data showing that the number of encounters at the southern border has declined thanks to an executive order recently signed by Biden.

“Thanks to the executive actions of the Biden-Harris administration, border crossings into Arizona continue to decline. The data is clear: Vice President Harris is the only candidate with a proven record of advocating for Arizona border communities like mine and who can be trusted to support and solve this problem,” Bisbee Mayor Ken Budge, who is supporting Harris, said in a written statement.

Trump’s running mate JD Vance was in the state a few weeks ago to attend his own rally in Glendale and visit the border. Vance, a U.S. senator from Ohio, toured an unfinished section of the border wall in Cochise County. During his speech there, he blamed Harris for the country’s immigration problems.
