“We paid for our training,” says Nigerian shot put star Sade Olatoye

In a recent interview with NewsCentral, Nigerian shot putter Sade Olatoye revealed that she and her teammates have not received any financial support from the Nigerian government in their preparations for the 2024 Olympic Games.

When asked about the support received, Olatoye explained that everything was self-funded, including training, coaching, medical expenses and competition fees.

She stressed that they only learned about possible grants at the championship stage, which would have covered barely two percent of their four-year training costs.

Olatoye said: “Pretty much every year, my teammates and I have to pay for everything out of our own pockets.

“We pay for our training, our coaches, medical care and the competitions themselves, so we have to pay for everything out of our own pocket. Only when we are at the championships do we hear about possible subsidies.

“I have been training for four years and the scholarship I receive for the competition is not even 2% of what I pay out of my own pocket for four years of training.”
