The infamous Red Wedding scene was unforgettable, in which not one but three of the series’ main characters died: Catelyn Stark, Robb Stark and Talisa Maegyr, as well as their unborn child. If that was devastating enough for the audience, it was even worse for the actors.

Oona Chaplin had difficulties filming the Red Wedding scene

The Red Wedding took place during Season 3, Episode 9: The Rains of Castamere. It was staged by Lord Walder Frey (David Bradley) after Robb Stark (Richard Madden) broke a marriage pact with House Frey because he fell in love with Talisa Maegyr (Oona Chaplin).

When Edmure Tully, a friend of the Starks, decided to marry one of Frey’s daughters, Robb, Talisa and Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) attended the wedding, believing that all was well in House Frey despite the broken pact.

And so they celebrated all night, but when the guards closed the doors and the melancholy song began to play, Catelyn knew – like a mother’s instinct – that something was wrong. Frey finally delivered his wedding gift by murdering the Starks and their bannermen. Talisa and her unborn child were the first to die after she was stabbed in the stomach. Robb was also speared and Catelyn’s throat was slit.

As a viewer, it was difficult to watch this harrowing scene, but can you imagine how difficult it was to film it? Chaplin revealed in an interview with Weekly entertainment In 2019, she said that she actually cried when her character was already dead. The director approached her to remind her: “Oona, you have to stop crying, dead people don’t cry. You’re dead, just be dead.”

Not only the actors, but also the crew members cried about this scene. Showrunner David Benioff said that filming The Red Wedding was a “bittersweet thing“ and if no one feels any emotion while watching it, then the film is a complete failure.
