How to create sustainable editorial teams for the future

MPR News anchor Angela Davis recently moderated two panels on the state of local news in Minnesota. The first featured funders who are pushing new models to revitalize newsrooms across the state and country. The second panel was aimed at news leaders across Minnesota. In a time of cuts and decline, how can journalists reinvent the way they do things?

According to a study by Northwestern University, the state of local news is bleak.

More than half of U.S. states have little or no access to local news. Areas without local news, known as the “new deserts,” are multiplying at an alarming rate.

In addition, trust in news is at an all-time low. How can we change that?

It’s a topic close to MPR News anchor Angela Davis’ heart. Last month, she moderated two panels on how to breathe new life into local news. The groups met July 18 as part of a national gathering of Report for America corps members in Minneapolis at the Weisman Art Museum.

Report for America is a national service program that sends journalists into local newsrooms to report on topics and areas that receive little coverage in the literature.

On Monday at 9 a.m., we’ll hear the first panel of funders and philanthropic leaders committed to advancing and redefining local news. National and local leaders will discuss why they believe journalism is essential to a functioning democracy, how business models could be changed to make newsrooms sustainable, and how to address the unique challenges facing the news industry in rural communities.

If the local news business model needs an overhaul, what can journalists working within the system do to change it?

Tuesday morning at 9 a.m., the focus is all on Minnesota. During the July 18 event, moderator Angela Davis spoke with news leaders from across Minnesota about the challenges and opportunities for journalists in the current media landscape. Together, they stress the need for new business models, a workforce that better reflects the communities it serves, and a collaborative rather than competitive approach among Minnesota newsrooms.
