Vergara on reunification; Bowen on the press’s creation of tension

Sofia Vergara on the timing of a possible “Modern Family” reunion; Julie Bowen on the press’ attempts to create tension between her and Vergara.

I have written before about my love for ABCs Modern Family and how it’s become one of my calming background shows to play after long days. Like many fans, I wish we could get a little taste of where all the characters are now. There are definitely some storylines that could use some freshening up to make up for the ending, but that’s another conversation we’ve had before and will likely bring up again in the future. Between in-person reunions of the cast, the topic coming up in interviews, and “non-canon mini-episodes” from WhatsApp, excitement continues to build around a potential reunion of some sort.

In a recent interview with diversity, Sofia Vergara reiterated that she would love to return to the set, adding, “It would be so much fun. A TV movie, maybe?” It would definitely be great to get an update on the Tucker-Pritchett-Dunphy family and how things have progressed over the past four years. However, Vergara believes it might be too soon to bring the family back together – although she joked with co-star Ed O’Neill about the timing. “I always joke with him (saying), ‘Ed, don’t die, because when we do the sequel, it’s going to be some time and you’re the oldest of us. You can’t be dead,'” she shared.

We I also recently had another Modern Family Mention of Julie Bowen during Jennie Garth’s podcast, I choose myself. She talked about how she felt like the media was constantly pitting her against Vergara. “The press was constantly trying to make Sofia and I into some kind of Betty and Veronica,” Bowen revealed — and also talked about how the media kept trying to perpetuate a narrative that they didn’t get along. “I was like, ‘Oh no, I love Sofía. I love how different we are. She’s funny and humble and naughty, and she loves life, and she loves dancing and eating cake and all those things,'” Bowen added.

It’s great that these issues are being addressed, and even better how well the cast still gets along. I personally love seeing them together at their events and social media get-togethers. Bowen then spoke about how much she learned from Vergara while working together: “I learned so much about what it means to be a really strong, fully self by being with her,” adding that it was disappointing that the press spread the story that there was tension between the two.

In April, at the Hulu on Disney+ event, we also interviewed Sarah Hyland (Haley) about the possibility of a return series, a film or spin-off. When asked if she would return for the reunion event, whatever it would be, Hyland replied “maybe,” adding that she needs to know the details first. Hyland added, “I would love to see Haley succeed in her work, because I think that’s something we haven’t really been able to finish with her.”

In view of these and other interviews with Eric Stonestreet And Jesse Tyler Ferguson, it seems as if Modern Family is still fresh in their minds. I’m definitely excited to see how things have evolved for the characters. I would like to see some storylines refined and given more seriousness and attention to bring the show back to the perfect balance of humor, heart, and realistically relatable situations it had in the first five seasons.
