“@AndrewCastle63 is baffled by @RobertJenrick’s refusal to name the Labour adviser allegedly working to block Rwanda policy.”

Conservative minister Robert Jenrick says he has ordered a Mickey Mouse mural at a children’s centre to be painted over in a bid to break up people-smuggling gangs.

Minister puts himself in an awkward position by refusing to name names

However, Jenrick – like most of his colleagues – believes the best defence is attack. He wrote a column for The Sun this weekend claiming Keir Starmer is colluding with charities and lawyers to “thwart their work”. It’s a bold claim that requires more clarity.

Castle questioned Jenrick earlier today about the substance of his allegations. After a number of evasive answers, the presenter finally lost his composure with the politician, who repeatedly failed to clarify who was allegedly in cahoots with the Labour leader.

Real-time fact-checking has been a painful experience for Robert Jenrick, who has also had to defend his decision to paint over murals at an immigration centre for children earlier this year, arguing that the artwork was “not age-appropriate”.

The Conservative Party has announced a series of controversial measures to control migrant numbers. Ideas such as the Rwanda deal and housing migrants on unseaworthy barges have sparked outrage across the political spectrum.

Staff at the Kent Reception Unit fought back, but Jenrick reportedly remained adamant, trying to make it clear that this was a “law enforcement environment” and “not a welcome centre”, doggedly mimicking his boss Suella Braverman.

Politics was being made here for perceived right-wing voters, but even they might have recoiled, as many of his own MPs did. There was little danger of this unit becoming a welcome centre, as the last inspection report found the toilets were “unacceptably dirty” and there was an “overly limited” selection of toys for young children and “little reading material”.

A Tory minister going to war with Mickey Mouse is a perfect political image for the end of their era. May he be forever greeted by people wearing Mickey Mouse ears. Philip Pullman tweeted: “Cold, cruel, the act of a soul stunted and mean to the core.” Stephen Kinnock, the shadow minister for migration, said: “All they have left are harsh words and cruel and callous policies” as the story went around the world, embarrassing us all once again.
