Harris brings Sunbelt states Georgia, North Carolina and Arizona into play: Poll

Vice President Kamala Harris continues to erode former President Donald Trump’s lead in the polls, with positive poll results in four Sun Belt states, according to the latest New York Times/Siena College survey.

Harris is ahead in previously Republican Arizona with 50 to 45 percent and in North Carolina with 49 to 47 percent, while in Georgia and Nevada she remains in the race with Trump with a certain margin of error.

The poll was conducted from August 8 to 15 and included 2,670 voters surveyed. The margin of error was 4.4 points in all states except North Carolina, where it was 4.2 points. The poll is considered one of the most reliable polls in politics.

Don Levy, director of the Siena College Research Institute, said: “Compared to the polls in the swing states New York Times and Siena College since May, Harris has gained an average of more than 9 points in Arizona, Georgia and Nevada.”

“As both vice presidential candidates, JD Vance and Tim Walz, introduce themselves to voters, Vance is currently suffering from negative popularity in Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Nevada, while Walz is less well-known but is viewed positively in three of the four states – negatively only in Georgia,” Levy continued.

In Georgia, Trump leads Harris by 50% to 46% and in Nevada by one percentage point, 48% to 47%.

The latest poll results are primarily bad news for Trump, who had already largely won the four states before Harris entered the race.

A striking crosstab from the poll shows that voters in those states think Harris (43%) is too liberal, while Trump (33%) is too conservative. Harris was also able to regain some of the lost support of non-white voters and TikTok users who had abandoned President Joe Biden.

Voters agree with at least one point that the Trump campaign has been trumpeting through political media: Harris is changing her mind on political issues, unlike Trump. Hispanic voters, who are particularly critical in Nevada and Arizona, are 12 percentage points more likely to believe that Harris will change her position on political issues.
