Huber Heights group requests to put annex on November ballot

Huber Heights group requests to put annex on November ballot

HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WDTN) – A group in Huber Heights is submitting a petition to put a current resolution before voters.

Residents are raising their voices after the Huber Heights City Council passed a resolution authorizing the annexation of 296 acres from Bethel Township. The annexation would allow for a housing development to build about 1,400 new homes.

Discussions about annexation have been going on for years, and approval for annexation was given on July 22. Now a committee of residents has come together to demand that the matter be put to a vote.

The Building a Better Community with Neighbors PAC is calling on the Huber Heights City Council to initiate a referendum in which residents can vote on whether or not they want to annex.

Committee members campaigned in neighborhoods Saturday and collected signatures throughout Huber Heights. If enough signatures are collected, the resolution could end up on the ballot in November.

They believe that every citizen should have the opportunity to express his or her opinion on this matter.

“This is an opportunity for people who feel like they’re not being heard to have their voices heard on a level that local politics doesn’t,” said resident Frank Wylie. “It puts the issue right on the ballot and allows everyone to stand up and say yes or no. That’s a very important part of the process to show that you have a voice. It’s important.”

Additional petition drives will be held throughout the weekend and next week. The group has until Thursday to collect 2,300 signatures from Huber Heights residents in Montgomery and Miami counties.
