According to state media, a volcano erupted off the east coast of Russia following a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, sending a column of ash several kilometers wide into the air.

The Shiveluch volcano is located about 450 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city with about 180,000 inhabitants in the eastern Russian region of Kamchatka.

“According to visual analysis, the ash column rises up to eight kilometers above sea level,” TASS reported on Sunday morning local time, adding that the volcano had released a torrent of lava.

There were no reports of injuries, TASS said.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake was about 55 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and had a depth of about 30 miles.

The quake did not cause “major damage,” TASS reported. However, “buildings are currently being inspected for possible damage, with special attention being paid to social facilities.”

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations did not issue a tsunami warning due to the earthquake, TASS reported.

The US tsunami warning system had previously warned that “dangerous tsunami waves as a result of this earthquake are possible within a 300-kilometer (about 186-mile) radius of the epicenter along the Russian coast.”
