Daryl Morey’s offseason with Sixers wins via NBA author

Did the Philadelphia 76ers have the best summer in terms of roster construction?

It is close, loud The athletics David Aldridge. In the NBA writer’s top ten rankings for the summer, the Sixers are in second place, only the Oklahoma City Thunder are better.

“I’m falling in love with the Daryl Morey Carnivale!” Aldridge wrote. “He’s doing his Wizard of Odds thing and I’m blown away like a Swiftie at an Eras Tour concert.”

A strong offseason has always been the Sixers president of basketball operations’ strength. Things may not always go as planned on the court, but Morey is known for making big swings in the offseason and frequently hitting the jackpot.

This season is no different. The Sixers expected to have plenty of salary cap space this summer, and they’ve used it to the best of their ability. Paul George, arguably the league’s best free agent this year, is on his way to Philly.

The Miami Heat lost a key player in Caleb Martin and had to watch him sign a contract with the 76ers. And after a playoff round marked by rebounding problems, the Sixers were able to re-sign one of the NBA’s best rebounders in Andre Drummond.

In addition to the headline-grabbing new signings, the Sixers were able to acquire some interesting names for the reserve division in Eric Gordon and Reggie Jackson. They also made two draft picks and signed a talented guard in Jared McCain and an interesting center in Adem Bona.

In addition to their newly acquired players, the Sixers also retained Tyrese Maxey, Kelly Oubre, Kyle Lowry and KJ Martin.

The Sixers’ performance this offseason might have been nearly perfect based on their master plan. While this is a big step in the right direction after being eliminated from the playoffs in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, Aldridge understandably also voices his concerns.

“Is this built to last — especially given the injury histories of Embiid and the 34-year-old George?” Aldridge added. “Can Caleb Martin repeat his big postseason moments in Miami and replace Batum? Can McCain break into the rotation? Will Oubre continue to make the leap forward he did last season on a prove-it contract? I don’t know. I’m too busy looking at the shiny watch Morey just pulled out of his pocket.”

The Sixers have a lot to prove next season, and while they end the summer feeling good about the roster they’ve assembled for next year, they must understand that the road to the title hasn’t gotten much easier.

The Eastern Conference remains strong considering the Boston Celtics are unlikely to see much turnover after winning the NBA Finals. Aldridge ranks the Celtics fifth as having the best offseason. The Orlando Magic and New York Knicks are close behind Philly after their busy offseasons.
