Sewage overflow near Arumbakkam metro station causes inconvenience

CHENNAI: Overflowing sewage is a constant problem for the commuters who use the Arumbakkam metro station daily as it gives off a foul smell and causes inconvenience. The metro users on the 100-foot road have brought the issue to the attention of the municipal workers but the problem still persists.

Motorists and pedestrians also complain that sewage overflow due to leaky manhole covers makes it difficult for them to use the sidewalk as water constantly runs over it.

Although there are no parking spaces alongside the subway, vehicles are loaded and unloaded at the entrance of the subway station, and even taxi drivers have difficulty parking even for a few minutes because the foul smell has become unbearable.

“Some buses from other districts have a stop near the metro station, but it is very inconvenient for passengers because they cannot wait at such places,” says Mohan, another resident of the area.

Commuters blame the authorities for inadequate maintenance of sewage systems, which often result in overflows. They are demanding better maintenance and immediate action to solve the problem.

“It is clear that the authorities are not maintaining the sewage system properly. This problem has been going on for months and it seems that nothing is being done. We cannot even wait for taxis or cars here because the sewage overflow is not only annoying but the stench is also unbearable,” says Jaya, who regularly takes the metro.

The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) is responsible for the maintenance of the manholes and sewerage system. When contacted, a senior official of the CMWSSB said that the team will inspect the site and ensure that the sewage overflow is stopped.
